Beary New Neighbors

February 18 2022

Moving from a residential area to a more remote location brings about a whole new set of challenges and preparedness. My checklist runs from night vision goggles, to a gun, to bear spray, to a full survival kit. Not to mention the first aid kit that needs to be put together for wounded animals should they show up on the property. The thought of designing my own home is as exciting as it is intimidating. A lot of unknown variables can be at play but having the right contractor who shares your vision makes it so much fun. I am blessed to have a guy who just ‘gets it’. The end result of the home, the vibe, the orientation for the best view…..he sees it all.

Ive collected hundreds of pictures and ideas and carefully filed them on Pinterest in their respective categories. So I feel ready to start putting all the ideas together and drafting the new home which we will start in September.

With all of that fairly well organized… it left me with thinking through the obvious change in environment to prepare for.

When the checklist starts to include knives, guns, survival kits, flare guns and a trauma kit……reality sinks in. This isnt just a move…..this is an adventure complete with the need for home generators and an understanding of black bears.

I have mastered the company of deer, elk, and moose. The black bear brings a new twist to the homestead. People told me to stay away from moose, never approach them, and absolutely never approach them if it is a momma with her babies. We all know how that turned out. :)

Bears kick the game up a little, and call for an added sense of awareness if I am out and about on the property. They are not super common in the area but being prepared for an encounter is obviously a must. They can be sneaky, they can raid your trash cans, and they apparently are very good at hiding behind trees going completely undetected.

I may not be setting a place for him at the dinner table….but providing him with an oversized tub of water to play in might start the relationship off on the right foot.

But thats just my opinion :)
